Staton Garden

School gardens have been shown to increase test scores in science, math and other subjects. They are also an excellent means of teaching students important aspects of healthy nutrition, horticulture, teamwork and the origin of foods.  Below are some important statistics that show just how important a role a garden can play in a school:

Staton Elementary has a vegetable teaching garden that is used by the students at our school.  We have partnered with Green Our Planet, a non-profit conservation organization that helps us develop our garden.

  • Schools with outdoor garden programs score higher on standardized tests in math, reading, writing and listening.  (Bartosh, 2003)

  • 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who participated in school gardening activities scored significantly higher on science achievement tests.  (Klemmeret, 2005)

  • Working in school gardens helps increase fitness levels and builds active healthy bodies. (Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2008)

  • Students who participated in school gardening activities increased their vegetable consumption and the variety of vegetables eaten. (Ratcliffe, 2011)

  • Elementary and high school students gained more positive attitudes about environmental issues after participating in a school garden program.  (Waliczek, 1999)
